Decorative Ceiling Tiles is proud to offer our new line of Shanko ceiling tiles from Shanker Industries to our customers. Since 1896, Shanker Industries has been known for manufacturing high-quality, beautifully decorated ceiling tiles made from real metal. For five generations, Shanker has used sand-cased steel dies from original wood carvings to create all of their tiles. This process gives Shanker’s tiles an incredibly sharp definition that brings out the finest details of their most intricate designs. Their designs are featured in commercial business such as Outback Steakhouse, TGI Friday’s, Ann Taylor Loft, and many more.
The use of steel tiles in architecture goes back to the 1860s. Designed as an inexpensive alternative to costly plaster decorations, they were first featured in American middle-class homes and painted white to more closely imitate plaster. They were inaccurately called “tin ceilings” because of the tin plating some companies used over the steel. Highly decorated steel tiles grew in popularity, and their fire-resistance made them a featured part of homes, taverns, and other businesses. Built to last, some original steel-tiled ceilings are still in use in private residences and public buildings today.
