Drop In Decorative Ceiling Tile Solutions

Written by Milan Jara on 17th Aug 2011

I want to touch on an oversight from my previous post about the great faux-tin ceiling photos that James sent in before getting into today’s topics — I forgot to mention that those decorative ceiling tiles were hand painted! That beautiful appearance seen in the pictures isn’t just from the faux-tin tiles — although they are very nice in their original finish — it’s also because James took the time to create his own unique look and the finished product is evidence of his hard work. Kudos to James for his excellent design taste and creative idea!

Have you ever wondered why commercial buildings use dropped ceilings or did you even know that they did? The next time you’re in a professional building such as a medical office or retail store, take a look at the ceiling. There’s a good chance you’re going to see 2′ x 4′ white tiles or possibly 2′ squares and they’ll probably be separated by a metal grid system. These are called acoustical tiles and the whole arrangement is normally called a dropped ceiling.

There are two primary reasons why these buildings use this sort of system: the first is to give the rooms or space better acoustics due to the construction methods often used in commercial buildings, but the main reason is that it gives easy access to everything above those tiles. All you need to do to get to the wiring, plumbing, and HVAC ductwork above that ceiling is simply raise one or more tiles — they come right out.

Why is this important to a homeowner and what does it have to do with decorative ceiling tiles? If you have a room or rooms where you need to get wiring, plumbing, or ductwork across and can’t go above the existing ceiling — go under it. It might be as simple as adding a plumbing line for an outside house bib and not wanting the pipe in your unconditioned attic — even if it is covered by your blown insulation — or you could want to add a few supply ducts to an area of your home that’s always cold.

Of course, you’re probably not going to want commercial acoustical tiles in your home, but thanks to Decorative Ceiling Tiles’ drop in faux-tin tiles — you have an attractive option. The same beautiful tiles that James used in his remodeling project are also made in a drop in style, just put up the easy to install grid and the tiles drop right into place. If you need to do any trimming, the PVC tiles can be cut with scissors. Decorative Ceiling Tiles’ faux-tin drop in tiles are very DIY friendly and if you feel ambitious, let James’ hand painted tiles give you some inspiration.
