Installing faux wood ceiling beams is easier than you might think, as they’re purely decorative with no structural work needed. These lightweight beams have three sides which allows them to slip over the nailing strips that secure them to the ceiling making installation a great DIY weekend project.

Tools and Supplies You Need to Install Ceiling Beams

Here are the tools and materials you need to complete this project:

Step by Step Installation Guide

Installing faux-wood beams is a four-step process:

1. Mark out your layout
2. Install rails
3. Cut the beams to length
4. Install the beams

We recommend having at least one other person for this project so one person can hold up the nailing strips and beams while the other finishes the step.

Step 1: Mark Out Your Layout

Before anything goes on the ceiling, it’s worth taking the time to get your foundation right. This is where preparing the ceiling comes in once you’ve marked the direction and placement of the beams.

For this step, you need:

• 1 Ladder
• A stud finder
• Painter’s tape
• A measuring tape
• 1 Pencil
• A box of 1-inch drywall nails
• A Hammer
• Chalk line

Start by locating the ceiling joists with a stud finder and mark them with painter's tape. If your beams follow the joists, you’re in luck, as you can secure the nailing strips directly to them. If they don’t follow the joists, follow the steps below.

Now measure and mark the location of each beam on the ceiling, then measure the inside of the beams so you know how far apart the outer edges of the nailing strips need to be, and mark accordingly on the ceiling.

If the inside of your beam is 3.5 inches wide, use single 2x4 nailing strips as they are the same width. If it’s over 3.5 inches wide, there will be a gap between a single strip and the beam, so it’s best to use two 2x2 nailing strips spaced apart. This way the outer edges align with the inside edges of the beam.

Hammer a nail in on the outer lines on the ceiling close to the wall, and attach a chalk line that you’re going to take to the opposite side of the ceiling and snap. Repeat for every outside line, two per beam.

Step 2: Install the Rails

Now that the chalk lines are up, you can start installing the nailing strips.

For this step, you need:

• 2 Ladders
• 2x2 or 2x4 wood nailing strips
• A measuring tape
• A drill
• 1 ¼ inch drill bit
• A box of toggle bolts or toggle anchors if you screw in drywall or a box of deck screws if you screw directly in the wood ceiling joists

Pre-drill ¼ inch holes every 36 inches on the nailing strips.

Have one person hold the strips against the ceiling so they are lined up with the chalk line, and the other person drills through the pre-drilled strip holes into the ceiling. If the rails are installed to drywall, they can be fastened to the ceiling with toggle bolts or toggle anchors. If the rails are attached to joists directly, they can be fastened with deck screws.

Check that the faux-wood beams fit over the nailing strips properly, as now is still the time to adjust.

Step 3: Cut the Beams to Lengths

Now it is time to cut the beams to the right lengths.

For this step, you need:

• 2 Ladders
• 2 Saw horses
• A measuring tape
• 1 Pencil or triangle and scoring tool
• A miter saw, circular saw, handsaw or Japanese saw

Measure the length of the ceiling with a measuring tape to follow each nailing strip and transfer to the beam. Repeat for every beam as not all ceilings are perfectly straight.

Pro tip: Mark light beams with a pencil and dark beams with a scoring tool so the measurements are less visible.

Now use a triangle to mark all three sides of the beam. Finish by cutting the beam with the saw of your choice. Miter saws are good for angled cuts, circular saws can be used for any straight cuts, handsaws are simple and reliable tools and Japanese saws are great for precise and fine cuts.

Pro tip: When cutting your beams to length, cut slightly outside the line and sand off the excess with an orbital sander or sanding block. This will give you a more precise fit against the wall.

Hold each beam against the ceiling to make sure the lengths are all correct.

Step 4: Install the Beams

Now it’s time to secure the beams.

For this step, you need:

• 2 Ladders
• Tubes of adhesive
• A caulking gun
• A measuring tape
• A box of 2-inch finishing nails or 2-inch head screws
• A nail gun, hammer or drill
• A tube of wood putty & a putty knife

Pro tip: Slip the beams over the nailing strips and check it fits before applying any adhesive. Once the glue is on, it’s too late to make any adjustments.

Apply adhesive on the side of the strips and slip the beams over them. Secure the beams with finishing nails or finish-head screws every 12 to 14 inches.

The last step is to fill these holes from the nails and screws with colored wood putty to match the beam finish.

Installing faux-wood beams is an easy DIY program whether you want to refresh a room in your home or create a more warm and rustic space in a hotel or vacation rental property. It’s more cost-effective than real wood ceiling beams, and adds a wow factor that you and your guests will love.

The cost to install faux wood beams can be calculated by including the price of the beams themselves and how many you need, the size and type of your ceiling as vaulted ceilings have more surface area than flat horizontal ceilings, supplies to install, and whether you hire a contractor for the installation.

The formula to calculate this is:

To use this formula, count how many beams you need, multiply by the price per beam and then add the installation supplies, such as nails and adhesive, and the labor cost.

For example, if you need 4 beams at $169.55 each, plus $50 installation supplies, plus $500 labor cost, and $200 in shipping the total cost would be $1,428.20.

(4 X $169.55) + $50 + $500 + $200 = $1,428.20

This price can increase or decrease based on the style and pricing of the faux-beams you choose. A primed finish (one coat of a single color) is less expensive than a stained finish (has multiple hand-applied coats) as the cost to stain the beams increases with the labor and supplies. The same applies to the materials used.

A high-density fiberboard beam made from compressed wood fibers costs more to produce than urethane, which is a lightweight foam. Not only is the raw material itself more expensive, but it is also denser, meaning more is needed for the same size beam. Rooms with vaulted or cathedral ceilings need more material compared to rooms with a flat ceiling with the same floorspace, so there is more square footage and this requires longer beams.

Now you’ll want to add in the price of shipping. The more beams you have and heavier the package, the more the cost of shipping will be. Faux-wood beams are lighter than authentic wood ceiling beams, so it is more economical to go with them.

Lastly, hiring a contractor will increase the bill as the costs of living, parking, materials, and transporting them into the region can go up and down. An urban condo in NYC may cost more than one in Katy, Texas as there could be more demand for contractors increasing the market rates, the cost of living is higher, and it costs more to park their vehicles during installation.

By knowing what increases and decreases the costs, then how to calculate odd shapes like cathedral ceilings, you’ll be able to estimate your total costs whether you DIY or hire a contractor. Below you’ll find information on the beams themselves, how many you need, and labor costs. From there, we give two step-by-step examples for calculating so you can get your answers.

The Beams Themselves

Faux wood beams range anywhere from around $90 for small 4-foot long beams to over $1,000 for large beams (over 19 feet). For longer and wider beams, more raw material is needed to make them, which is why the price is higher. They are also heavier, which means handling becomes more difficult and transportation more expensive.

The material used also makes a difference. HDF (High-Density Fiberboard) is made from compressed wood fibers so the raw material itself is already more expensive than urethane, which is an easily manufactured light foam. HDF is also denser, meaning more raw material is used to make the same-sized beam. If a 10-foot HDF beam is around $280, a similar urethane beam could be closer to $180.

Finally, the finish also makes a small difference. You can buy primed beams that you paint or stain yourself, or stained beams that come pre-finished and ready to go. Primed beams are less expensive up front but cost you more time as you will have to do the painting or staining yourself if you don’t hire a contractor. Buying prestained beams allows for instant installation, and depending on where you live and how much time you want to invest, could even out.

Calculating the Number of Beams You Need

The amount of beams you need will depend on the length of the ceiling and how many rows you want. Start by measuring the length and width of your room, the length being the direction your beams will run across then decide on spacing.

If you want a bolder look, space them closer together so they look like support structures in an old farmhouse or barn. For something more relaxed that is visible but doesn’t draw attention in a modern or contemporary home, try leaving a bit of extra space in the middle or larger spaces in between. The extra space will reduce the amount needed and lower your costs.

Also, keep in mind to leave a gap between 1 and 6 feet between the wall and the first beams on each side, as it is uncommon to have the first beam directly against the wall when they are for aesthetics only.

Once you’ve decided on your spacing and wall gap, calculate the number of beams you need by subtracting your two wall gaps from the total width, then dividing by your chosen spacing. Round to the whole number above.

If your room is 16 feet long, and you leave a 2-foot gap next to the walls and a 4-foot gap between the beams, you will need 3 beams.

Number of beams = (16-2x2)/4 = 3

The next and last step is to figure out how long the beams need to be. For a flat ceiling, your beam length is the length of your room. For a vaulted ceiling, beams go up the slope, so the length depends on the angle, not the room length.

You need two measurements for vaulted ceilings:

• Base is the horizontal distance from the wall to where the ceiling peaks.
• Rise is the vertical distance from the top of the wall to the peak of the ceiling.

Calculate the beam length by squaring the base and the rise, then adding them together and taking the square root of the total and rounding up to the nearest whole number. This is easier than it sounds, so don’t get nervous if you’re not good with math.

Beam length = √(base² + rise²)

If your room is 16 feet long and 16 feet wide with a half-vaulted ceiling, and the peak is 3ft above the top of the wall, your beam length should be 17 feet.

Beam length = √(16² + 3²) = 16.28 feet

Now that you know the formulas and how the total cost is impacted including supplies and labor, it’s time to calculate your actual project costs.

Example Calculations

The following examples cover the beam cost only, not labor or other materials. Once you’ve calculated the costs, add the supplies and/or labor and you have your estimated total cost for installing faux-wood ceiling beams.

Example 1: Flat ceiling in a 12ft by 15ft room

On a flat ceiling, beams are one per run with no joining required. The beams will run across the 12-foot length and be spaced every 4 feet across the 15-foot width, with a 1-foot gap from each wall.

• Beam: 12 ft long, 8 inches wide and 8 inches high with a stained finish: $678.22 each
• Beams needed: 4
• Total beams cost: $2,712.88

Example 2: Cathedral ceiling in a 13ft by 18ft room

On a cathedral ceiling, beams run up both sides toward the center. This means that beam length depends on the ceiling’s slope, not the room width.

To calculate the ceiling’s slope:

• Base: half the room width = 13 ft / 2 = 6.5 ft
• Rise: 4 ft
• √(base² + rise²): √(6.5² + 4²) = 7.63
• 8 ft beams are needed

For this room the beams are being spaced every 3 feet across the 18-foot width, with a 1.5-foot gap from each wall.

• Beam: 8 ft long, 4 inches wide and 4 inches high with a stained finish: $226.08 each
• Beams needed: 5 per side, 10 in total
• Total beams cost: $2,260.80

Celebrating 100 years of Art Deco!

100 years ago, the peak of Art Deco was celebrated by the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, and now it’s being celebrated again!

Warm winter colors are begging to trend

As the air begins to cool down and we can feel that winter is almost upon us, interior color trends are starting to match this cozy feeling and desire for some extra indoor comfort. ^*2

Interior color trends have been dominated by grays for a long time now. ^*3 Then, earlier this year, we saw a shift to much brighter interiors with the buzz around creating a “dopemaine decor”. ^*4

Now, the focus is shifting towards warmth and comfort that’s achieved with earthy, organic and grounded colors and tones: terracotta, oxblood, forest green, camel browns, and sandy neutrals. ^*5

As these warmer colors are trending in the cooler months, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re here to stay, but more of a seasonal expression.

What this means for interior designers:

Rather than repainting or installing new decorative wall panels and ceiling tiles, instead consider swapping out some soft furnishings that align with these trending colors. This could be achieved through the use of pillows, blankets, lamp shades and rugs (for example) in tones such as burnt orange, bordeaux red, cognac or forest green that give a strong sense of warmth and comfort.

Trending & emerging materials

In October 2025, we’ve seen advancements in extremely innovative new building materials be highlighted, and data to back that some other commonly used internal materials continue to grow in popularity among consumers. Reports also show that sustainability is no longer just a trend, but a necessity that’s here to stay.

Ec3 (electron‑conducting carbon concrete)

Just a few years ago, researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Switzerland came up with the concept of the worlds first “rechargeable cement-based batteries” - it’s a type of concrete that contains electrodes, allowing it to store and release energy. ^*6, ^*7

In October 2025, MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) unveiled a huge advancement on this. They created a much more advanced version of these concrete batteries/“ec3” (Electron‑Conducting Carbon Concrete) that’s allegedly about 10 times more powerful than earlier versions. ^*8

This advancement could bring the material from a concept to a practical building material that’s both structural and could help to power buildings. ^*9

Cork flooring

Cork certainly isn’t a new material, nor is the trend of sustainable building practices, but a report released in October by Accio shows that Cork is continuing to hold onto its popularity and demand as an eco-conscious and budget-friendly internal building material. ^*10

Rather than people searching for “cork products” or “cork wall tiles”, there’s a huge amount of interest in people looking for “cork flooring”, which suggests that this is its primary use when it comes to interior design. ^*11

Cork, among other sustainable materials like bamboo, isn’t just holding onto their popularity but growing, as consumers' interest in renewable materials is continually on the rise. As for cork, it isn’t just renewable, but it’s highly affordable, which may be further adding to the consumer interest. ^*11, ^*12

Green building materials market to double by 2032

The sustainable building materials market is continuing to grow, and drastically. ^*12

According to a report by Credence Research, the value of the global green building materials market is set to grow from $285.88 billion in 2024 to a whopping $517.5 billion by 2032. ^*13

This isn’t just due to continued consumer interest in creating a greener, more sustainable world, but it’s heavily impacted by stricter laws and an increase in global energy prices. ^*13

What this means for interior designers:

Interest in sustainable building practices and materials isn’t just trending, but they’re now the new standard and are only set to grow in popularity.

Although some of these materials, like “concrete batteries,” aren’t meant to be incorporated into interior design plans, residential and commercial building owners are no longer just interested in sustainability, but due to rising material costs, energy prices, and stricter regulations, sustainability is becoming a necessity.

To go over and beyond for your clients while staying on-trend, don’t just incorporate sustainability into your interior design, but put it at the forefront of your planning.

September 2025 has seen the rise of home design tools powered by AI. For a long time, this has just been in the experimental stage, but this technology is now being used by both architects and everyday homeowners, not just the ultra-tech-savvy.

Platforms like Maket.ai and Planner 5D allow users to generate floor plans and 3D room layouts with speed, they can be produced almost instantly. Going a step further, reportedly, some tools are almost getting to the point where designers can simply speak and describe their desired architectural floor plan and AI can then produce a buildable draft from it ^*1 - incredible, right?!

This blend of human imagination coupled with AI could completely transform the way homes are designed in the near future, let alone the timeline enhancements. It will be interesting to keep an eye on this space and see what other exciting enhancements come to life in the near future!

Floating Homes are Coming to a Coastline near you!

What was once reserved for the ultra-rich or the very opposite end of the scale is now making headlines as a realistic solution: floating homes.

To combat issues such as rising sea levels and population growth around the world, floating homes are being floated as a possible solution.

Projects like the SeaPod by OceanBuilders have shown that this isn’t just a sustainable option, but a realistic one, where each floating home can be adapted to the coastline that it’ll live in. ^*2

On a larger scale, Maldives Floating City demonstrates that it’s not just a choice for luxury dwellings and residential spaces, but it could soon become a mainstream way of living for thousands of people.

What this means for interior designers: Stay ahead of the curve and keep an eye on the floating-architecture space, as this concept is rapidly changing from a novelty idea to a reality that might end up being a future project request by one of your clients.

New color & finish trends

Getting back onto land and retreating inside, we’ve seen some exciting things happen in the world of color and finishes throughout September, from new trends to announcements that will result in further interior design trend changes in the near future.

Color of the Year: Universal Khaki

Sherwin-Williams have announced what they believe to be the 2026 Color of the Year, and it might not be what you expected! ^*3

In 2025, we’ve seen designers seek bold and bright interior designs, whereas the Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year is Universal Khaki, which is a warm, mid-tone tan. This doesn’t necessarily sing “Dopamine Decor” trend, however, the idea is that it sets a beautiful foundation to then be amplified by other design elements.

What this means for interior designers: Use Universal Khaki as a foundation and then layer it in bold accents to energize and adapt the color to your space and style preferences to achieve a fresh new look that’s right on-trend.

Change of season influencing color palettes

Each year when the warmer months come to an end, we usually see interior style preferences shift to cozy color palettes that make you want to stay indoors, and the following design trend aligns with these expectations.

If designers weren’t opting for bold colors and finishes throughout 2025, they seemed to be sticking with greys, although it seems that has come to end. These sterile pallets are now being swapped out for more earthy colors like rich greens, terracottas, and browns paired with creamy whites and (you guessed it!) khaki color-ways. ^*4

What this means for interior designers: Say goodbye to sterile grey and swap it out for the new season trends that are all about earthy tones like terracotta, deep greens and warm neutrals.

Pinterest spike in searches for Art Deco interior

Pinterest has released their 2025 Fall Trends Report and it shows a staggering 745% increase in searches for “art deco interior”! ^*5

Here, at DecorativeCeilingTiles.net, this is of no surprise to us based on the demand for our Art Deco style panels that have seen an increase in demand throughout 2025, mostly in the last few months, although the growth is more than what we could have anticipated.

This surge in interest for Art Deco style interiors signals a revival of such a timeless design style, with the broader market desiring a nostalgic glamour and modern sophistication in their spaces. It feels like a natural progression of the all-so-bold Dopamine Decor trend from earlier this year.

What this means for interior designers: With such a large increase in searches for art deco interiors, it should be of no surprise if some of your clients are interested in this style.

To help achieve an art deco interior design style, incorporate geometric patterns, luxe finishes and bold accents.

Martha Stewart introduces Reverse Color Capping

Color capping has been all the rage in the second half of 2025. In our Design Trends - August 2025 blog post, we explained that in simple, color capping is “..a technique that uses different shades (usually 3 shades are used) from the same color family to create a smooth gradient from your walls up to the ceiling”.

World-renowned interior design enthusiast, Martha Stewart has gone on to say that although this is great in principle, it should be adapted to the space and that this trend can evolve when in the hands of professionals. Examples of this are reversing the gradient, starting with dark tones and finishing with a light ceiling, or using more than one hue (& not just on the walls & ceilings, but with decor and other items too) that pair well together, and completing the gradient with both palettes. ^*6

What this means for interior designers: Take the concept of color capping and experiment beyond the basics by trying things like reversed gradients and multi-hue palettes to create a high-impact interior that sets your work apart and is on-trend in more ways than one.

Some fun and interesting things have happened in the architectural space. From repurposing an entire building to an old design trend being reborn.

U.S. Embassy transformed into a hotel

Sir David Chipperfield transformed the former U.S. Embassy in London from an outdated building into a luxury hotel. ^*7

This massive renovation project, taking what was an eyesore and turning it into souring profits, where it’s reported to cost between £17,000 and £24,000 for a one-night stay in the hotel's penthouse, puts more emphasis on “reuse culture”. ^*8

Potentially, this may spark the interest of other property developers to imagine revitalising and repurposing old buildings, rather than going straight for the modern-day way of thinking, which is the knock down & rebuild school of thought.

What this means for interior designers: Be a champion of the reuse culture by reimagining outdated spaces with fresh design solutions, proving that in the right scenario, revitalisation can be more valuable than knock-down rebuild projects.

Hotel-worthy Built-in beds

Built-in beds haven’t always had a great reputation in the broader market, although they can serve a purpose and be the perfect room addition in the right space. The quirkiness often leaves a stronger and longer-lasting impression than the benefits, until now.

Designers from all over the world have begun including built-in beds right into their architecture and floor plans ^*9, and to us, it makes perfect sense, and keep in mind that when we refer to a “built in bed”, it doesn’t have to mean one that’s compact and folds into a wall, rather a bed that’s been including in the architectural design to suit the space.

Homes are no longer just a space to retreat to, but for many people, they’re now a full-time sanctuary. Incorporating the bed into the floor plan from the get-go allows for a more practical, meaningful and cohesive space where the bed isn’t an afterthought, but carefully considered from the project’s start.

What this means for interior designers: Start incorporating beds into your design plans from the ground-up, thinking of them as architectural elements, creating a residential sanctuaries that feel intentional and cohesive.

If the word “fretwork” doesn’t look or sound very familiar, don’t be concerned as you probably already know exactly what it is, just not the name. Putting it simple, fretwork refers to decorative designs that are cut into wood, metal, or other materials such as stone. Typically, the designs are repeating geometric or floral patterns.

Traditionally, these patterns were carved/cut using accurate tools, such as a fretsaw (which is where the name comes from).

So, what are Fretwork Panels?

Today, fretwork is almost always produced on ready-to-install panels, hence the term “fretwork panels”. The origins of Fretwork

To understand a little more about why these decorative panels were first created and how they’ve remained a popular design feature to this day, let's take a look at the origins of Fretwork.

Last month in our June Design News update, we touched on color drenching in the form of ceiling tiles and decorative wall panels. This trend has been growing in popularity and dominating the interior design space over the past year or so with bold, all-over tones sweeping across walls, moldings, and of course, the ceilings.

This trend is now maturing and some reflecting has been done and new unspoken guidelines are being introduced as designers opt-in for something along the same direction as drenching, but a bit subtler: color capping.

Putting it simply, color capping is a technique that uses different shades (usually 3 shades are used) from the same color family to create a smooth gradient from your walls up to the ceiling:

• Lighter tones cover the walls.
• Mid-tones accent details like trim or molding.
• A darker tone used on the ceiling "caps" the room

Color capping has become a trend this August because it offers a softer and more refined alternative to full color-drenching, which many people find a little too intense. If there’s one clear theme this month, it’s glamour making a comeback. Pinterest’s Fall 2025 Trends Report* revealed over an 800% increase in searches on their platform for “art deco vintage”.

Geometric motifs, metallics that sing elegance, and luxurious curves are making their way back into interiors in a way that seems to be of a Hollywood Regency style from the 1930s and 40s.

This revival isn’t limited to furniture, lighting and art, it extends to surfaces. Statement tiles are back in focus, particularly bold terracotta tones, blue ceramics, copper finishes and vintage-inspired patterns.

A lot of interior design trends come and go quickly, and in August there has been some pushback from professionals on particular trends. A widely shared report gathered insights from five leading interior designers on what they’re already tired of in 2025.*

Interestingly, among the trends they’d like to leave behind were:

• Color Drenching
  As mentioned earlier in this post, drenching can be too overwhelming when done without balance, hence the emerging trend of color capping
• Intricate Patterned Ceilings in Small Spaces
  Some argue they can feel busy or gimmicky in smaller rooms, and instead simple patterns should be used that aren’t visually overwhelming
• All-neutral Minimalism
  Considered flat or uninspired compared to richer palettes
• Overly Coordinated or Themed rooms**
  Themes and coordination can be a great way to design a room, but rather than going all-out (which can seem out-dated or out-of-fashion in August ‘25), just add references and subtle notes of the theme

This doesn’t mean these ideas and trends are done-and-dusted, never return, in fact, patterned ceilings and drenched color are still popular with homeowners, but it’s just about pulling back and going with a more timeless design style that won’t seem outdated after a short period of time.

4. Continuing the Ceiling as if it’s the “Fifth Wall”

Despite some designers calming down a little bit on certain bold ceiling treatments, the ceiling remains a major design element that will likely remain a trend until the end of time, in some spaces anyway.
