Stay Cool At Home Without Air Conditioning

Written by Milan Jara on 9th Jun 2015

It is August, and suddenly the air conditioning stops working. Where we live, the heat can be unbearable during the summer and sometimes cooling devices just stop working. Since we are creative people, we have come up with a few ways to stay cool inside your home when the air conditioner is not working.

Use Water To Your Advantage

Just because the air conditioner is out of commission doesn’t mean that the refrigerator doesn’t work. Drinking plenty of cool water during the day can help you to beat the heat and you can also pour some of that cool water into a spray bottle to carry around with you as well. The occasional light mist of cool water will do wonders to keep the temperature of your body down.

Close The Curtains

The rays of the sun contain ultraviolet radiation that can make it really hot in your house. Close up the curtains and the shades in your house and keep the sunlight out. You will notice an instant drop in the temperature of your home and you can sustain that temperature drop by keeping the curtains closed.

Open The Windows At Night

The temperature in your area will drop at night by at least 15 to 20 degrees. It may not feel like a lot of relief at first, but the outside air cools almost instantly when the sun goes down. Open your windows at night to cool off your house and then close your windows and curtains during the day to capture that cooler air for as long as you can.

Trap The Cool Air

You have taken all of these steps to create cool air in your home without air conditioning, but it could all be for nothing if the air dissipates into rooms in your home that you do not use. During the day, close the doors of your bedrooms and other rooms you do not use to help keep the cool air contained in your living areas.

Focus On The People

The most important piece of advice you can get about staying cool without air conditioning is to cool the people in your home and not the home itself. A small oscillating fan that covers two people on a couch will do just fine because there is no need to cool the entire room. Cold drinks, cool misting water, and applying cold compresses will keep the people in your house cool, which is the whole point of cooling in the summer in the first place.

When the weather is hot and humid, it is easy to keep cool outside, because all you need is a sprinkler and a lawn chair, but when you are in the house, life without air conditioning can be brutal. When you live where we live, you find ways to stay cool without air conditioning because air conditioning does break down from time to time. Get a little creative and maybe even have some fun with it, and you will find plenty of ways to stay cool in your home when the air conditioner is getting repaired.
